Market History

In 2008, the Regional Environmental Council (REC) led a four-week pilot of a Farmers’ Market in the Main South neighborhood of Worcester.  This short pilot showed them that there was in fact demand for a Farmers’ Market in the neighborhood and that it was feasible.

In 2009, Hunger-Free & Healthy partnered with REC to develop a full-season Farmers’ Market in Main South, and in 2010 a second market was set up in Great Brook Valley.  The markets are a celebration of local food, art, and community.  Many vendors, including REC’s YouthGROW Farm, are organic – all are local.  WIC, Senior Coupons, and EBT (SNAP benefits) are all accepted.  All purchases made with SNAP/Food Stamps are half off!

Vendors have included Heirloom Harvest, Clearview Farm, Gibson’s Dairy Farm, YouthGROW Farm, Many Hands Organic Farm, Daily Bread Bakery Cafe, Sol of Mexico, One Love Cafe, Best Jewelry, Short Fuse Comics, the Artichoke Food Coop and more!

In 2010, with increased funding from Hunger-Free & Healthy, as well as the MA Dept. of Agriculture and the Worcester Cultural Commission, REC will be expanding the market into two locations – a continued site in Main South at the Central Branch YMCA, and a second site at the Great Brook Valley Health Center on Tacoma St.   Both will operate on Saturdays from June – October.
